Canine body awareness and proprioception
This workshop focuses on training exercises that enhance canine body awareness and proprioception. It introduces fundamental techniques to improve coordination, foot placement, body control, and balance through simple and structured exercises. Participants will learn basic groundwork activities that help dogs develop improved movement patterns, confidence, and physical awareness in a safe and supportive training environment.
The practical training will be carried out using solid, stable targets combined with supportive exercises. These tools create clear structure and safety in the training process while supporting the dog’s development of controlled movement, stability, and body awareness.
During the workshop, three exercises will be introduced. Each exercise is open to five Curlies, allowing a total of 15 dogs to participate in the practical training.
Exercises Include
- Foundation body awareness
- Front feet and rear feet target and elevated front feet target
- Foundation cone work
- Wrap around cones, figure-eight patterns, and heeling on both sides
- Foundation proprioception
- A basic proprioception course walking over solid targets with forward focus
Eligibility
- Dogs aged 12 months or older may take part in the practical training.
- Dog-handler teams should be familiar with basic training principles, including the use of a marker signal and food reinforcement.
- Examples of marker signals include “yes”, a clicker sound, or verbal praise such as “good boy/girl”.
- Knowledge of a nose target to hand is preferred but not mandatory.
- Dogs must be comfortable performing exercises in a room with an audience.
Karen Strandbygaard Ulrich

I have been a dog trainer for many years and a behavior counselor since 2000, with a long-standing interest in canine conditioning. I have studied canine fitness and proprioception with Sam Turner (Holland), Jana Gams (Slovenia) and Zita Birlie (Denmark). I hold a master’s degree and work for Hund & Træning, educating dog trainers and behavior counselors.
Since 2023, I have offered courses in canine conditioning and body awareness under my own concept, SKILL-training. Safety is a key concept when working with canine fitness training. Training focuses on increasing coordination and body awareness through step-by-step learning with the use of safe equipment to prevent injury in dogs. Apart from the physical benefits, canine fitness training also increases self-confidence in the dogs.
